More top scores, more wines, more producers: The ratings from Italian wine guides are now available

More top scores for more wines from more producers: The performance of Alto Adige wines in the latest editions of the most important Italian wine guides not only highlights the high standard of wine production in the region. "The results also show very clearly how broadly we are now positioned at the highest level of quality," Eduard Bernhart, Director of the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines said.

The assessment of the director of the umbrella organisation of the Alto Adige wine industry is no coincidence: A look at the latest ratings from Italy's most prestigious wine guides and competitions shows that, with 387, not only were 42 more top ratings achieved than in the previous year, but the number of award-winning wines (234; +25) and producers (95; +17) also rose significantly.

Eduard Bernhart particularly emphasised the increase in award-winning producers, because this figure represents the enormous breadth with which the Alto Adige wine industry has established itself in the premium segment. "Of course, we at the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines are particularly pleased that the distribution of top marks reflects the diversity of our wine region and that the producers include wine cooperatives, estate wineries and independent winegrowers," the Director of the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines commented.

The most award-winning wines
The breadth at the top is also evident when looking at the most award-winning wines. In this ranking, the winery Castelfeder has risen to the top with six highest scores for its 2021 Chardonnay Riserva Kreuzweg Family Reserve Alto Adige DOC.

Ten Alto Adige wines from seven producers follow in second place, each with five top scores. They are the 2023 Lagrein Riserva Taber Alto Adige DOC (Cantina Bozen), the 2021 Chardonnay Nama Alto Adige DOC (Nals Margreid), the 2021 LR Riserva Alto Adige DOC and the 2022 Sauvignon Riserva Gran Lafóa Alto Adige DOC (Cantina Colterenzio), the 2020 Appius Alto Adige DOC and the 2021 Sauvignon The Wine Collection Alto Adige DOC (St. Michael-Eppan Winery), the 2012 Pinot Blanc Rarity Alto Adige Terlano DOC and the 2022 Terlano I Primo Grande Cuvée Alto Adige DOC (Cantina Terlano), the 2017 Gewürztraminer vendemmia tardiva Epokale Alto Adige DOC (Cantina Tramin) and the 2022 Müller-Thurgau Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner Alto Adige DOC (Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof).

More white wines, but red varieties at the top
It is hardly surprising that Alto Adige, a white wine region, accounts for 189 of the 387 top ratings, while red wines account for 157, Alte Adige sparkling wines for 24 and sweet wines for 17 top ratings. Against this backdrop, however, it is surprising that red varieties top the list of award-winning wines. Pinot Noir ranks highest here with 31 out of 234 top scores.

For Eduard Bernhart, the second and third places in the grape variety ranking are particularly important. They are occupied by Schiava (24 wines awarded top marks) and Lagrein (22). "We are delighted with the outstanding performance of our indigenous Lagrein and Schiava varieties year after year – this year they account for almost one in five of the award-winning wines," the Director of the Consorzio Alto Adige Wines. "It shows that authentic wines firmly rooted in their terroir enjoy a special status among wine lovers."

Behind the three red varieties at the top follows a whole series of whites. Sauvignon has 21 excellent wines, Pinot Blanc has 17 and Gewürztraminer has 15.

How did the producers fare?
The overall conclusion of this year's Italian wine guide ratings, namely breadth at the highest quality level, is also (and above all) confirmed by a look at the producers who can claim at least one wine with top marks. There are 95 in total, which is 17 more than last year.

Compiling a ranking based on the number of top marks, the Cantina Terlano once again takes first place this year with 20, followed by the Cantina Tramin with 17 top marks. The Cantina Girlan and the Cantina Colterenzio can celebrate 15 top marks each, while 13 top scores go to the St. Michael-Eppan Winery and the Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof and to Elena Walch. Ten top marks each go to the Cantina Bozen, Castelfeder, Gump Hof – Markus Prackwieser, Manincor, Nals Margreid and Ansitz Waldgries Manor Christian Plattner.

Looking not at the number of top ratings but at the number of award-winning wines, the Cantina Girlan and the Cantina Tramin lead the rankings with seven wines each. The Cantina Andriano, Cantina Bozen, Cantina Colterenzio and Cantina Terlano, as well as the Winery Tiefenbrunner | Schlosskellerei Turmhof and Elena Walch, on the other hand, have six wines with top marks.
